It is often argued that education must be available to every individual. I totally disagree, because it increases strain on the government budget which is harmful to the economy. Also, it may reduce accountability for academic performances.
One of the main reasons why education in university should be charged, is that paying tuition of the students may affect the government budget financially. If the national budget is spent on education fees, the economy can’t boost due to financial pressure. Free education is not truly free, the tuition is paid by taxpayers, for example, paying academic fees leads to increasing taxes. Also, without tuition fees, universities, or schools may face budget constraints, which leads to the low-quality of education, poor facilities.
Secondly, making university education free may reduce accountability for academic performance. When students are required to pay for their own tuition, they accept it more seriously or students may be less motivated to complete studies, leading to lower engagement. For instance, if university is free, the students may pick a major just because it is fun, even if there are no jobs in that field. For example, in countries where universities are free, student wastage is usually higher, because students may think they have nothing to lose financially.
To conclude, I believe the idea of free education is not practical. It damage the national budget, leading to a declining quality of education and facilities. Furthermore, when students pay their own tuition, it often promotes a greater sense of accountability.
