Chapter 11
The forest stretches beyond us endlessly in all directions, and the sun hangs low in the sky. We’re all exhausted from the terror that witch Cecilia put us through, and now, we only have a scrabbly map that’s falling apart by the second to guide us through this monster of a forest. Pita suddenly drops to the ground, sighing loudly. “I’m tired from all this walking,” she complains, crossing her stubby little arms. I sigh, exasperated. “Pita, we’ve only been walking for like, half an hour.” I say. “Exactly,” Juanita says, turning around to face the two of us. “We have to get to Abuelitas’. Mama is probably terrified out of her mind!” Reluctantly, Pita nods, and stands up.
We continue trudging through the forest. The sun is setting by now, peaking through the dense trees, and casting rays of pink and orange light across the horizon. Daytime is slipping away from us. However, there is still enough light for me to make out the outline of something, maybe a quarter mile away. “Juanita!” I snap, “do you see that?” She nods, looking curiously at the thing I’m pointing at. “Well, let’s go check it out!” Delia exclaims excitedly.
As we get closer, I can finally scope out what we had seen. It’s a small cottage, with a single room. After a few more minutes of walking over the layer of crunchy leaves covering the forest floor, we arive at the front door.
