It is often argued that environmental protection should be the sole responsibility of governments rather than individuals. This essay strongly disagrees with this suggestion for several reasons.
The primary argument supporting my opinion is that individuals play an important role in reducing environmental pollution. People produce waste and consume natural resources in their daily lives. By changing their habits such as reusable bags, saving electricity, and sorting rubbish, they can reduce the amount of waste and pollution they create. For example, if more people use reusable water bottles instead of buying plastic bottles, the amount of plastic waste sent to landfills can be reduced. Therefore, individuals should also take responsibility for protecting the environment, rather than leaving this task entirely to the government.
Another point behind my belief is that environmental protection is more effective when governments and individuals work together. Governments can introduce environmental laws and punish businesses that cause pollution. However, these laws may have limited effects if individuals continue to litter, waste resources, or ignore environmental regulations. For instance, a government may ban plastic bags in certain places, but people also need to bring reusable bags and follow the regulations for the policy to work effectively. As a result, protecting the environment should be a shared responsibility between governments and individuals, rather than the government’s duty alone.
In conclusion, I strongly disagree with the suggestion that governments should play the only role in environmental protection, given the aforementioned arguments.
