In the UK, most elderly individuals live in care homes with others of the same age. In these facilities, they receive assistance from caregivers, such as nurses, and the costs of their care are covered by the government. I believe that families should bear the expenses for their elderly members because the government has many other responsibilities toward its citizens.
There are several reasons why families should finance the care of their elderly relatives. First, families have historically done a great deal for their children, which establishes a social responsibility for offspring to reciprocate. When parents were young, they earned and spent money to meet the needs of their children and families. Now that they are older, they require support from their children, both emotionally and financially. This support allows them to enjoy their later years without worrying about healthcare and other essential services.
On the other hand, there are also valid arguments for why the government should cover care services for care homes. Firstly, the government collects various taxes from its citizens, and it is their fundamental duty to provide free healthcare and services to senior citizens in need. Every citizen contributes financially through taxes for their future healthcare, making it the right time for senior citizens to receive the benefits of these contributions.
If the government pays for these expenses, elderly individuals can access all necessary services without feeling like a burden to their families. Not all family members can afford to cover the full range of expenses their elderly parents incur. Furthermore, some senior citizens do not have children, while others may have only one child to support them. Therefore, I think the government should provide all necessary services free of charge to senior citizens. If family members choose to contribute, they could be compensated for the expenses related to care and treatment. This form of support would significantly improve the quality of life for senior citizens in the later stages of their lives, allowing them to feel better and more fulfilled.
Although the government must provide care, this obligation particularly applies to individuals who have limited financial means or no family support. While some families may be wealthy and able to take on this responsibility, those elderly individuals with restricted finances require assistance, especially in these circumstances.
