Nowadays, school uniforms are considered mandatory in many countries. While unified clothes have brought some merits, I suppose that its drawbacks are more significant.
Admittedly, there are some basic advantages of wearing a uniform in schools. Initially, it could break the economic barriers between students and enrich their sense of equality. In other words, students who come from poor families would not feel that they are lower than their peers from wealthy ones. Moreover, wearing school uniforms can increase students’ focus as the learners might only concentrate on their educational curriculum and acquisition of knowledge instead of overthinking about how they look like and how their peers look at them. Therefore, this usually reduces discrimination in his school communities and enhances the spirit of unity.
Nevertheless, I hold the notion that the demerits eclipse those previously analyzed values. Firstly, it might affect students’ self-confidence and sense of creativity. This could be due to the fact that learners are forced to wear school uniforms without having the freedom to choose their clothes. consequently, many students might lose their ability to make decisions in other situation which often affect their self-esteem. Secondly, buying school uniforms could be costly for many families. Thus, forcing them to buy it may put financial stress on the family which usually makes them feel inferior to others. For example, some families may find difficulties in paying school fees thus they may get loans to teach their offspring, these families should not face another economic hindrance of school clothing.
By way of conclusion, despite the fact that wearing unified school clothing might be advantageous in many aspects, I believe that its drawbacks are more notable than its value.
