Most families place their elderly parents or grandparents in care homes or nursing homes because taking care of them can be demanding. While it has some advantages, I believe the negative effects are more noticeable.
One significant advantage is that elderly people can have the opportunity to have friends there, which makes them feel less lonely. There can be different ages of people in their families, which make it difficult for elderly people to communicate and spend time with others who have similar interest and experiences. Therefore, having people of a similar age around them can be more engaging and enjoyable. For example, elderly residents can talk about their past experiences, play games together with people of a similar age.
However, there are some disadvantages to this situation. One major drawback is that elderly people may feel abandoned when they are seperated from their families. Although they may have some friends in care homes, they can still miss their children or grandchildren. This can be even worse when their families or relatives do not visit them regularly. To come with other disadvantages, the care homes can be very expensive, which can be difficult for families to afford. Furthermore, elderly people may not receive enough attention from the care workers, as care homes can sometimes be crowded.
In conclusion, living in a care home can help elderly people to make new friends and avoid loneliness. Despite the benefits, I believe that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages because elderly people may suffer from isolation and families may face significant financial costs.
