Nowadays, many authorities impose harsher penalties on traffic offenders due to the high increase in road accidents. While I agree that stricter punishment can play an important role in improving road safety, I do not believe that they are the sole effective solution.
One major benefit for introducing stricter penalties for driving offences is that they can act as a powerful deterrent against dangerous driving. When road users face non-custodial sentences such as substantial fines, licence suspension or even imprisonment, they are more likely to comply with traffic regulations. As a result, they will no longer pose a danger to others, thereby reducing the number of serious violations and accidents. Take Vietnam as an example, heavier traffic penalties imposed in 2025 have helped reduce offenses significantly such as speeding, driving without a valid licence, drink-driving or running red lights.
Nevertheless, punishment alone can not address every cause of traffic accidents. Effective driver education can raise the awareness of road safety and encourage responsible behavior, particularly among inexperienced drivers. In addition, improvements to road infrastructure, such as better lighting, speed camera installations, pedestrian crossings and speed-control systems, can reduce the likelihood of road violations and traffic-related deaths.
