Band 8+: In many countries, people now wear western clothes such as suits and jeans rather than traditional clothing. Is this a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The increasing prevalence of Western-style clothing, such as suits and jeans, over traditional attire is a notable trend in many countries. This shift is driven by several factors, and in my opinion, it has both positive and negative implications.

There are some reasons to account for this trend. Firstly, globalization is continually blurring the lines between traditional and foreign clothing. As a result, Western brands and fashion trends become more accessible worldwide, and consequently, people may unconsciously adopt these styles without being aware of their origins. Secondly, Western influencers and celebrities have a profound impact on individuals, especially young people. Through movies, TV shows, or music videos, these figures popularize their fashion choices, which are then emulated by impressionable audiences. Lastly, jeans and suits are often perceived as more comfortable and practical than traditional costumes. For instance, in India, the sari, while culturally significant, can be cumbersome for everyday activities, making Western clothing a more convenient alternative for many people in this country.

On the one hand, the adoption of Western attire may offer several benefits. A noticeable advantage of this phenomenon is that it can foster global identity and belonging. This is because we are living in an increasingly interconnected world. Wearing Western attire can make individuals feel more integrated and accepted when traveling or working internationally. Additionally, pursuing the same type of fashion can strengthen the relationship between nations, reducing racial and cultural barriers, as well as promoting a more harmonious global community. However, on the other hand, the dominance of Western clothing can lead to the erosion of traditional costumes, and by extension, cultural heritage. As conventional garments become less common, the cultural practices and identities associated with them may also diminish, ultimately leading to a world with diminished original and distinctive values.

In conclusion, the shift towards Western-style clothing is largely driven by globalization, media influence, and its practicality. While this trend can faciliate globalisation and international cooperation, it also poses some risks to the variety of cultural values all over the world.
