Band 7+: In many countries, shopping is becoming a free time activity that replaces traditional hobbies, such as reading and sports. What are the reasons for this? Do you think this is a positive and negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years, shopping has become a common way for people to spend their free time. Instead of doing hobbies such as reading, sports, or meeting friends, many people prefer to visit shopping malls or shop online. This eassy will discuss the reason for this trend and explain why I beleive it is mostly a negative development.

One major reason for this change is the rapid growth of shopping centers and online stores. Modern shopping malls are not only places to buy things but also places for entertainment. They often include restaurants, cinemas, and comfortable spaces where people can relax. As a result, many individulas choose to go shopping because it is easy and enjoyable. In addition, online shopping has made purchasing products very convenient. People can buy almost anything from their phones without leaving their homes.

Another reason is the strong influence of advertising and social media. Companies promote new products everywhere, which encourages people to buy more items. At the same time, many people want to follow fashion trends and show their lifestyle on social media. Because of this, shopping becomes an activity that people do for fun as well as for social reasons.

However, I beleive this development is largely negative. Firstly, spending too much time on shopping can make people more materialistic, meaning they focus too much on buying things instead of developing useful hobbies. Secondly, it may cause financial problems if people spend more money than they can afford. Finally, other activities such as exercise, reading, or creative hobbies are healthier and more beneficial for personal development.

In conclusion, shopping has become a popular leisure activity mainly because of modern shopping facilities and the influence of advertising and social media. Although it can be enjoyable. I beleive it is mostly a negative trend because it encourages materialism and reduces time spent on more meaningful activities.
