In many nations, local festivals are being substituted by globally promoted cultural events because of economic growth and social development. Traditional celebrations are no longer practised in some villages because villagers no longer find them worth celebrating and this is as a result of so many reasons.
On the one hand, some countries often host global events to attract tourists who are interested in such celebrations into the countries. As a result, businesses in that location often experience a surge in sales, particularly hotels and restaurants at that period of time, and there is also an increase in employment. For instance, in Nigeria, during Calabar Festival, many people from around the world participate in this event. This increases the revenue generated by the show. In addition, social development improves significantly by fostering peace and unity amongst nations.
On the other hand, some people express cocern about the replacement of traditional cultural celebrations. They believe that if the events are not often promoted, they may become obsolete. Some traditions and cultures are no longer practised by young generation because of the influence of foreign events. Unfortunately, the next generation may not understand or know the moral values of their cultural heritage. To illustrate, in Igbo communities, the New Yam Festivals is one of the remarkable occasions celebrated yearly in villages. It portrays the importance of the igbo culture and also enhances a stronger bonding with one another. If this event is replaced by international events, the traditional practices may go into extinction.
In my opinion, there should be a balance between these events, none of them should overlap each other as there are of importance to the society. Governments should encourage citizens to also actively partake in traditional events while attending international shows.
In conclusion, although international marketed events improves the economy immensely and also foster national peace, traditional cultural events should be promoted as well to ensure that the cultural practices are preserved.
