Today, there are more interests among women in studying STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). However, there are only few of them who decided to pursue their career in related field. This essay believes that there are many ways to tackle this issue and endorsing women in STEM work field.
To begin with, one that often hinders women in having a STEM career is the stereotypes that hiring managers have. Many prefer to hire female employees, as they believe that women have less credibility than men do and they should focus on domestic work instead. The approach that can be taken is through policy and advocacy. Government and policymakers can consider this issue as a priority while formulating or developing policies. On the other hand, society and other non-governmental institutions can do their part by advocating initiatives to promote gender equity and diversity in STEM.
Further action that can be taken by the communities is through the early exposure and education focusing in science and technology. It is true that nowadays we have more women in STEM, yet introducing this field to children in their early age can grow their curiosity and interest. Education institutions can present showcases, like Science Day, or extracurricular program that offers exploration and variety in related concepts. Of course, the effects can be more tangible if female role models are involved in the programs.
To sum up, although more women are interested in studying science and technology, yet the numbers of female workers in STEM are still considered small. Social expectations and prejudice among women can be the reason behind the exclusivity especially in workplace. This can be eradicated with the help of policymakers and communities through advocacies.
