Band 8+: In many professional sports, there is an increase in the number of athletes using banned substances to improve their performance. What are the causes of the phenomenon and what are some of the possible solutions?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In many professional sports, the use of banned substances to enhance athletic performance has become increasingly common. This worrying trend is mainly driven by fierce competition and ineffective drug testing systems. However, the issue can be addressed by imposing strict punishments and implementing more rigorous testing procedures.

One major cause of this problem is the intense pressure athletes face during high-level competitions. In environments where only the best succeed, some athletes may resort to cheating to gain an unfair advantage. When winning becomes more important than fair play, they might feel justified in using performance-enhancing drugs. Another contributing factor is the failure of current testing systems. If drug tests are not conducted regularly or thoroughly, athletes may find it easy to bypass the rules. For example, Jon Jones, a well-known martial artist, admitted that he was able to take banned substances due to the lack of strict testing procedures at the time.

To combat this issue, authorities should enforce strong punishments for those who violate anti-doping regulations. Severe consequences would make athletes think twice before using illegal substances. For instance, in 2018, a Russian athlete was banned from the Winter Olympics after testing positive for drugs. This incident led to tighter monitoring and greater compliance among other athletes. Another effective solution is the implementation of strict and frequent drug testing. When athletes know they could be tested at any time, they are less likely to risk using banned substances. A clear example is the 2012 London Olympics, where strict drug testing led to the disqualification of many athletes and helped maintain fairness throughout the event.

In conclusion, the growing use of banned substances in professional sports is mainly caused by harsh competition and weak testing systems. Nevertheless, this issue can be reduced through strong legal punishments and more reliable testing methods, which together promote a fairer and healthier sporting environment.
