Many people from all over the world struggle with health issues because of overconsumption junk food. I disagree that authorities should raise taxes on fast food because such a policy would be unfair and ineffective.
Firstly, higher taxes on fast food would affect low-income families the most. For many people, fast food is affordable and convenient option. For example, if prices rise, poorer households may suffer in order to feed their families. Therefore, this policy could increase inequality rather than solve health problems.
Secondly, this decision does not guarantee a change in people’s eating habits. Many individuals choose fast food because of their busy schedules, not only because it is cheap. Even if prices increase, some people will continue to consume unhealthy food due to lack of time or preferences. In result, the tax may not achieve their goal.
Instead of raising taxes, government should focus on education and approach. For instance, cities could support the opening of affordable healthy cafes and food markets and educational institutions could conduct explanatory lessons. When people are informed and have real choices, that are likely to adopt healthy eating habits.
In conclusion, using tax as a tool to control people’s diet is not the most effective way. Without improving awareness and food availibility, higher taxes will only create a problems such as financial pressure rather than healthier habits.
