Band 7+: In some countries, it is illegal for companies to reject job applicants their age. Is this a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In our contemporary society, there are some countries that prohibit companies from making refusals for job applicants in terms of age. The question of whether this is a positive development or negative has resulted in many debates among individuals. Some people argue that banning companies from categorizing and making rejections for candidates according to their age can be beneficial to the overall development of professions, while others are of the opinion that it may lead to negative consequences. In this essay, I will explore both sides of the argument and present my own perspective on this phenomenon.

Let’s start by looking at the plus side of the argument. On the one hand, one compelling argument in favor of prohibiting companies from refusing candidates based on their age can promote equality in promotion as it ensures that individuals are evaluated with the reliance on more important factors such as skills, experiences, and qualifications rather than marginal factors including age. Another undeniable reason why it is useful to eliminate age discrimination among companies is that these companies can easily benefit from a diverse range of perspectives which may lead to the overall development of the company. Additionally, age should not be a barrier to consistent learning and adaptation. Encouraging companies to consider applicants’ age promotes lifelong learning, where individuals are valued for their ability to adapt and grow, regardless of age.

Turning to the other side of the argument, opponents argue that strict regulations towards age-based hiring can impose particular disadvantages. Cost concerns, firstly, can lead to some conflicts as older workers tend to command higher salaries due to their life experience. For instance, for some companies, especially smaller ones or financially struggling ones, hiring younger workers may be cost-effective, and age-related restrictions might create economic challenges for those businesses. Innovation and adaptability can be a second reason why it is important to consider age factors since critics suggest that younger applicants may bring more innovative perspectives to a company. While some businesses appreciate the experience of the workers, others prefer to choose younger workers due to their ability to adapt to rapidly changing technologies which can contribute to the innovativeness and competitiveness among other businesses.

In summary, it’s crucial for governments to find a perfect balance. They should create rules against age discrimination while also understanding what type of factors play a crucial role for businesses when hiring. This approach not only fosters a fair and inclusive workforce but also promotes a balanced and sustainable development for all businesses.
