Job applicants age discrimination has become a widely spread practice in numerous states around the world. Does this have any positive sides and could it be potentially justified in the reality where the retirement time gets postponed every year?
To commence with, I would like to locate the reasons, however subtle those might sound, making employers to decline applicants of age. A thing that comes up, is that there are several age related diseases, and medical data supports this assumption for certain, which may afflict one’s ability to execute job’s responsibility as effectively. Nevertheless, people of all ages are prone to the risk of getting sick, and in extreme cases are subject to insurance coverage, not the employer’s responsibility. The other thing, that may be of relevance, is that individuals getting older tend to become more conservative and, in spheres requiring maximum flexibility, sometimes prove themselves weaker.
Other than that, senior’s experience is of great value and may become undeniably essential in various cases, where young people can only rely on their theoretical knowledge. However, businesses can benefit from both experienced and newly hired specialists by blending their efforts, whereby, combining experience, relative to the problem, with new approaches, brought by young.
In conclusion, I would like to emphasize that in the contemporary world, with the retirement age getting prolonged, it is just unfair and cruel to reject job opportunities to elderly people. Considering the benefits, which might be gained by proper allocation of labor resources, I would call it unwise to limit the hiring process by one’s age criteria.
