Band 9: In some countries people spend long hours at work. Why does this happen? Is it positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In contemporary society, the tendency to work long hours has become more prevalent across various countries. This essay attempts to shed light on the underlying reasons behind this phenomenon before arguing that it is a predominantly negative development.

The increasing frequency and intensity of working hours can be attributed to two pivotal factors. Chief among these is that the escalating living costs across various regions have propelled individuals into long working hours. Skyrocketing expenses in housing, education, and healthcare have created a situation where people have to work for a longer duration to earn additional income, meet basic demands, and ease their financial burden. For example, families with school-aged children are more likely to encounter considerable household expenses such as tuition, textbooks, and uniforms, which forces parents to overwork to offset these costs. Besides that, the obsession with financial success can also be another primary reason. With the development of this digital age, income levels can play a crucial role in determining a person’s social status, leading many to work extra hours to climb the career ladder and enhance social standing.

While spending more time at work can ensure financial stability, I am convinced that this trend is riddled with a litany of problems. One primary concern revolves around its potential adverse effects on an individual’s well-being. Numerous studies highlight a correlation between chronic overworking and pronounced deterioration in cognitive function, including diminished concentration and impaired memory, which poses a threat to both mental and physical health. Worse still, individuals may also face an imbalanced personal life. Excessive workloads may result in insufficient rest, reduced interaction with close relationships such as family and friends, and weakened bonds between family members.

In conclusion, the upward trajectory of spending additional working hours can be ascribed to factors such as the escalating living cost and the fixation on financial prosperity. Despite certain advantages, I contend that this trend does more harm than good, potentially jeopardizing personal well-being and negatively impacting the quality of private life.
