Band 9: In some countries the average weight of people is increasing and their levels of health and fitness are decreasing. What do you think are the causes of these problems and what measures could be taken to solve them?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In many countries, the average body weight of individuals is rising, while levels of health and fitness are declining. This essay will analyse the main causes of this issue and propose effective solutions to address it.

One of the primary causes of increasing obesity is the widespread availability and affordability of processed food. Such products are often high in sugar, unhealthy fats, and artificial additives, making them both appealing and addictive. As a result, many individuals consume more calories than required on a daily basis. Another significant factor is the increasingly sedentary lifestyle adopted by modern populations. With the rise of desk-based jobs and digital entertainment, people are engaging in far less physical activity than previous generations, which contributes directly to weight gain and declining fitness levels.

To tackle this problem, both individuals and governments must take responsibility. On a personal level, people should be encouraged to adopt balanced diets consisting of fresh, home-cooked meals and to engage in regular physical activity. On a broader scale, governments could implement policies such as imposing higher taxes on unhealthy food products and running public health campaigns to raise awareness about the dangers of obesity. Additionally, creating more accessible public spaces for exercise, such as parks and sports facilities, would encourage a more active lifestyle among citizens.

In conclusion, the rise in average body weight is largely driven by poor dietary habits and a lack of physical activity. However, through a combination of individual effort and government intervention, this issue can be effectively mitigated.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Read the following text from an educational magazine. Some people believe that university students are required to attend classes.
