In certain countries, there is a growing trend of people marrying at older ages and having fewer children compared to previous generations. While there could be a number of reasons why this is the case, in my view, this development should be viewed negatively.
There are several key factors that contribute to people marrying later and having fewer children compared to previous generations. The main one is that many people are prioritizing their education and career goals before settling down. The pursuit of higher education and the desire to establish a stable career often delay marriage and childbearing. Another one is economic pressures, such as the high cost of living, housing, and childcare, have made people more cautious about starting families. As a result, young adults may feel they need to achieve financial stability before committing to marriage or children.
However, I would argue that the growing trend of people marrying and having children later in some countries should be viewed as a negative development. First and foremost, in some countries, a declining birthrate could lead to an aging population, which places strain on social services and the economy. For instance, fewer workers might result in lower productivity and economic challenges in the future. Personal regret or pressure would be another impact of that trend. For instance, some individuals may face societal pressure or experience regret if they delay marriage and childbearing too much, especially if they struggle to conceive later in life.
In conclusion, while education and career goals are primary reasons behind late marriage and childbearing in some countries, this trend is undeniably harmful for population decline and personal regret or pressure in many ways.
