It is undeniable that people all around the globe have the preference to have delayed pregnancy. While this trend is beneficial in certain circumstances, its shortcomings should be taken into consideration.
On the side of the argument, there are people who argue that the benefits of having a child late considerably outweigh its disadvantages. The main reason is work and life pressure. Young couples are already under pressure to be financially stable, which means they have to work constantly and even have to work overtime to save more quickly. Hence, couples have no time to take care of their child, if they have one. Another advantage of giving birth later in life would be having freedom to explore the world, pursue their hobbies and interests as well as gain hands-on experiences of different cultures without the constraint of parental responsibilities.
However, there are negative aspects that should be taken into consideration. The first disadvantage of postponing having a child is that older women have difficulty conceiving. As women grow older, their fertility level worsens, requiring some women to get fertility treatments which costs a ton of money. In addition to the health risk, it causes a generational gap when having a child at an older age. This could further lead to a harder connection between the parents and the child. To give a concrete example, if parents have their first child in their early 40’s, the 40- year difference with their child makes it difficult to understand their feelings due to the different prejudices between each generation.
To sum up, while there are certain drawbacks that need more attention, I am of the opinion that the positive aspects are likely to be more significant.
