Many people are in favor of the international discussion on allowing high school graduates to travel and work. However, there are those with the mindset that education should be a continuous path into university after completing high school. In my opinion, I agree with the mindset of having young adults travel and work, as this will foster maturity and financial discipline.
On one hand, it is clear that continuing a university education is important to success. Moreover, young adults are more likely to retain and understand information that they have learned from previous years and apply it to their new university setting. Furthermore, if the educational path is not continuous, there can be a loss of knowledge obtained in high school. For example, a subject like calculus, if learned in high school or secondary school, would be easier to understand and master if it were learned a year ago as opposed to three years ago. This can, increase the chance of success in pre-graduate courses.
On the other hand, in my opinion, there are greater advantages to traveling and working before entering college. For instance, having the ability to create income and learn financial responsibility can be a viable lesson for a young adult. In other words, learning how to save money and spend wisely can be very beneficial. Having a job and traveling will teach these lessons to an individual. Also, there may be an opportunity to work in a field and learn a skill or trade that can create a lifelong economic option before entering higher education. Finally, the advantage of traveling is that it has been shown to increase maturity. There are a lot of risks that must be assessed while entering foreign countries. Learning how to adapt to these situations can be very useful and in some cases, it can be applied to university
In conclusion, attending university after high school may seem like a good option for some. However , in my opinion, it is important to have a job and travel, as it will teach independence and adaptation to a young adult entering University
