Band 7+: In some countries young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high schools and starting universities studies. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of young people who decide to do this.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In the modern era, young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university studies, which has become an integral part of daily life. While some people argue that this trend offers significant benefits, others believe that it has several drawbacks. This essay will discuss both the advantages and disadvantages.

On the one hand, there are several clear benefits of teenagers being inspired to work experience during a gap study era. The most prominent one is that individuals who do working after schooling studies have huge experience in related fields of study. In other words, young people who work during this time learn how to manage money and interact with adults in a professional environment. For instance, a student working in a local office might develop better communication skills than someone who only studies. Consequently, this leads to a more mature and responsible attitude when they finally start their university studies.

On the other hand, despite the advantages, there are certain drawbacks that cannot be ignored. Chief among these is the loss of academic momentum. This is because after staying away from books and exams for a whole year, many students find it difficult to get back into the habit of intensive studying. For instance, many people experience a ‘brain drain’ where they forget basic academic concepts or lose interest in their chosen subject. As a result, it can have a detrimental effect on their grades during the first year of university.

In conclusion, although taking a year off provides some notable advantages such as maturity and practical skills, it also brings certain disadvantages like a lack of focus on education. On balance, I believe that a gap year is a great idea if the student has a certain plan, as the life lessons learned outside the classroom are often invaluable.
