High school graduates are often advised to take a gap year before heading for their academic studies. Gap years are a good resetting and preparation period before starting a stressful and dynamic life as a student.
Applying at universities right after high school is a complicated and confusing process for new high school graduates. First finishing high school and afterwards having to deal with additional exams, submission documents and applications. This process finds a lot of students getting lost along the way and sometimes even leads to them dropping the idea of studying completely. For this reason, parents and teachers propose students take a gap year to clear their thoughts before choosing the right field of studies and universities. Gap years can be a good way of resetting young adults brains and a great time to gather experience while joining a working place before they join university.
On the other hand, one gap year can sometimes expand for newly graduated students and easily become a longer break period than planned. This is usually the case with students that rely on their own finances and live an independent lifestyle. These students mostly find themselves struggling to pursue their university life after their paused year due to lack of financial support or lost interest in the process of waiting.
In my opinion, gap years are a great way of recollecting and resting after high school and preparing for the studies to come. If planned properly, gap years can be used to gather work experience and prepare for student life without pressure. However, it is important to be adamant about pursuing studies after this period has passed.
