Band 5+: In some parts of the world, people buy far too many clothes. What are the reasons for this? How can people be persuaded to reduce the number of clothes they buy?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Life is not same for everyone. Some has too much in their plate which they can not eat and some has too little to fill the stomach. Some people spends an hour to decide what colore they want to wear and some people has to work an extra hour, just to have enough clothes to cover their body. No one is wrong at what they are doing. However, a reasonale utilization of prividelge is something we all need to understand.

Being in this progressive world, if one has all the basic needs fulfilled, they will start aquiring things which they want. And human wants can never be fulfilled. That is why, when people have enogh to survive, their focus shifts from fulfilling needs to fulfilling their wants. And they starts buying an extra pair of clothes, an extra pair of shoes, an extra room in their house, an extra car and the list goes on. This impects the environment by using the natural resourses and dumping unrecycled garbage. People are often judged by their outfeet and this makes them buy more and more clothes. Also, the fashion world moves very fast. If someone buys something today, it might go out-of-trend in a month. People wants to be seen and recogzied, and they would buy anything which makes them feel seen.

To reduce the number of clothes people buy, their perspective of being seen and acknoledge buy clothes should be changed. I have seen people buying a trendy jacket because it looks nice and suffer in the cold, because the jacket doesn’t provide the heat their body needs. People starts ignoring their basic needs over being in trend. The leading fashion brands can play a significant role in this. They can shape people’s perspective from wearing a trendy clothes to wearing something which suits their body and what they are comfortable in wearing. I belive to stop people buying too many clothes and spend on what they need, we need a shift in people’s mindset and hvaing the leading fashion companies being accountable for the stress it causes on natural resourses and harm to environment.

Having a good pair of clothe which looks good is acceptable, as long as it is comforting to out body, fulfills our basic needs and not causing harm to the environment.
