In the modern world, communication skills are crucial due to the widespread use of various technological devices, including mobile phones and social media apps. As a result, many employees have started to lack soft skills such as face-to-face communication and teamwork. In the following paragraphs, I will discuss the challenges posed by digital devices, why this is happening, and how to enhance soft skills.
To start with, it is evident that many workers heavily rely on electronic gadgets. They constantly communicate with each other through text messages on social media platforms like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp, which has a negative impact on their soft skills. Consequently, they encounter difficulties when trying to communicate face-to-face. For example, in my country, Bangladesh, a few decades ago, people preferred direct communication while working together. Now, they face multiple challenges when collaborating due to their dependency on communication tools.
Furthermore, during the global spread of COVID-19 a couple of years ago, when many people experienced depression and spent extended periods at home, numerous employees resorted to using mobile and personal electronic devices for work. This shift has affected their career progression by diminishing their communication skills and teamwork abilities. In addition to the soft skills regression, many workers not only lost their confidence in communication but also faced significant impacts on their professional and personal lives.
In conclusion, communication technologies like mobile devices are overshadowing employees’ career paths, leading to a decline in their communication and collaboration skills. This reliance on electronic devices hinders their ability to engage in effective in-person interactions while working in the field.
