Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 8+: In the past, when students did a university degree, they tended to study in their own country. Nowadays, they have the opportunity to study abroad. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Currently, students have more opportunities to attain a foreign university degree than a domestic one. In this essay, both the advantages and disadvantages of this development will be discussed.

First and foremost, having a foreign diploma gives them a better chance of finding a job. In developed countries, universities have rigorous academic programs focusing on practical skills and knowledge, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for the job market. Additionally, students have access to state-of-the-art facilities and extensive reference resources, enabling them to conduct cutting-edge research and experiments. As a result, they are eligible to get a well-paid job because they perform duties that domestic graduates might lack. Another advantage is the opportunity to enroll in specialized programs unavailable in their home country. Developed education systems receive significant funding from governments and businesses, allowing for a wide range of programs that cater to diverse interests and career paths, which creates conditions for students to pursue their passions and build a future in their chosen field, regardless of financial or policy barriers in their home country.

Although there are some benefits, studying abroad may cope with several challenges. One of the main challenges is the cultural adjustment. Students may struggle to adapt to the various customs, gestures, and communication styles in their distant country. Additionally, homesickness, missing family and friends, and experiencing culture shock can prove overwhelming. Another significant challenge is the financial strain of studying abroad. While scholarships can assist in covering some of the tuition fees, the remaining costs, including living expenses, can be too expensive for many students. For instance, a postgraduate degree at a prestigious university like Harvard can cost over $80,000 for international students. To resolve this problem, they may have to work part-time, which can negatively impact their academic performance.

In conclusion, studying in different countries gives students a better background for seeking jobs and potentially developing themselves. However, financial and cultural problems are some obstacles that may concern them before deciding on their learning environment.

WRITING TASK 2 You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic: A lot of money is spent nowadays searching for oil.
