Technology has grown so rapid that yesterday’s dreams are becoming reality today. With recent innovations, people can keep contact with others without their physical presence, thereby helping people to keep relationship further and make new friends. As strong as advantages of communication tools are, drawbacks, such as poor communication and isolation, carry more weight, I believe.
Technology have been shaping the way people converse with each other for many years, with social media sites – telegram and reddit – assisting them to communicate with relatives and friends, although people they care about are far away. This possibly helps people to keep their relationships intact and share their opinions or advices with others, which is the solution for poor relationships – a problem people had to deal with before the advent of communication devices and sites. Not only do users make their relationships long lasting, but they can also benefit from establishing new ones as there are numerous people are out there share the same interests, a potential sign of strong friendships, which is likely to improve their networking.
These arguments are notwithstanding, the advantages of communication tools are too simplistic, if not flawed. Most users are obsessed with technology to make money, scrolling on social media and watching nonsensible videos, which is the waste of time and likely to make them brainwashed, instead of just interacting with others. Even if social media users do interact with their loved ones, they are likely to face with loneliness due to paucity of face-to-face social contact with their parents and classmates. This makes most of the users to cut themselves off from others around them, with lack of socializing creating problems with social skills and worsening existing bonds. Since social media is addictive, most people prefer staying home in front of screen to going and sharing their opinions and expressing their feelings with friends or family members, which probably has high costs – time, energy and poor soft skills.
In conclusion, even though social media sites confer advantages, helping users to keep their contact with others and establishing new relationships, the disadvantages hold more weight, I think, as most users cannot make most of them.
