Online platforms – namely TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, or Shoppee – have become a virtually indispensable part of our everyday life, enabling unprecedented accessibility and convenience. However, these platforms have exposed us to significant risks regarding security and privacy due to the increasing amount of data shared online. In my opinion, although sharing data in cyberspace – a virtually inevitable part of the contemporary world – can lead to serious repercussions should this information be exploited for ill use, it can still provide numerous benefits when governments and companies cooperate to ensure transparency in data management and protection.
One reason why I support data sharing is that it can improve users’ experience and provide individualized content. By analysing the data and information from users, algorithms can detect your preferences and needs, thereby curating suitable recommendations. Such personalization and automation can greatly reduce the need to find content manually, saving considerable time and effort. For example, the algorithm of TikTok can recommend videos based on our past reactions and engagement time, providing us with highly personalized content with little human effort. Therefore, sharing personal data online can significantly enhance convenience and user experience.
However, opposers of data sharing are justified in pointing out that this practice can threaten users’ privacy and safety. Once our information is uploaded online, it is virtually impossible to remove it completely. Such permanence, coupled with the visibility of online media, can leave our data vulnerable to exploitation from ill-willed individuals or organizations, who may put it to malicious use, endangering our safety and privacy. For instance, exploiters can generate indistinguishable deepfake content using the images we uploaded online to commit fraud or blackmailing, which can cause serious damage to our personal life and reputation. In this sense, data sharing can leave our data susceptible to ill use, negatively affecting our privacy and safety.
Nevertheless, it is virtually impossible not to share our personal data in today’s digitalized world, given how online platforms have become inseparable from daily life. Therefore, the real problem lies in the way by which governments and companies protect and manage these data. Governments should establish strict data protection and data transparency regulations, ensuring that users’ personal information is not subjected to leakage or ill use. At the same time, companies have to strictly follow these policies and constantly improve data encryption to combat any potential threat from hackers and exploiters. Through the concerted efforts of governments and operators, data privacy and security risks can be mitigated.
In conclusion, sharing personal data online undoubtedly poses significant threats to users’ privacy and safety. However, I believe that through the collaboration of governments and companies to combat data theft and data exploitation, sharing data online can greatly improve the convenience and personalization of online content.
