The place of the freedom of speech in a free society is questioned by many. And some people suggest government regulation about the matter. In this essay, I will discuss this question and reason my views. Firstly, I will talk about the requirement of freedom of speech and secondly should it be regulated by the governments.
To begin with, freedom of speech is an essential right for everyone. It helps our society for the better by allowing different points of views on different topics that are discussed. If it didn’t exist, the same ideas would be discussed over and over again in echo chambers without any proper opposition. In fact, qualified discussions and counter arguments force the suggestion to be improved. As a result, freedom of speech is a guaranteed liberty of the modern world and it helps our society function better by allowing individuals to tell their own opinion without facing any consequences.
On the other hand, numerous people question the need for freedom of speech while others think it should be controlled by governments. In a healthy environment freedom of speech is always helpful and required. But the discussion of inhumane and barbaric things should not be allowed. With common sense, we humans can agree on what is good and bad. Any extreme suggestions about limiting others rights and freedoms cannot be counted and tolerated as freedom of speech. Nowadays many people with harmful intentions hide behind this right and use it as a shield to protect themselves while spreading their toxic thoughts to others. As a result, governments must prohibit harmful thoughts from being expressed in order to preserve our civilization and society.
In conclusion, it can be agreed that in a healthy environment freedom of speech is an essential liberty to help us build a better world. However, expression of ill and harmful ideas should not be counted and tolerated in the same manner.
