In this day and age, having personal digital devices among each member of the family has become extremely common and popular. It is often argued that using digital devices will collapse family relationships. I partly agree with this viewpoint, as technology when used properly can also promote family bonds.
On the one hand, one of the major reasons why technological advancements may result in the decline of family relationships is that these devices reduce face-to-face interaction among family members. Nowadays, many individuals with the family overuse digital devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Even they spend time sitting together or sharing family meals, some family members still remain absorbed in these devices. As a result, people with the family will not have enough time to talk, communicate, and connect to each other, which ultimately makes them less understand their family members or even have serious conflicts due to small problems. Thus, technological devices could reduce the level of family closeness and damage family unity.
On the other hand, technological inventions can also foster family unity when they are used for appropriate purposes in moderation. People with the family can interact with others through the internet by sending email, text messaging, or video calls. Thus, people will have the opportunity to meet and talk to their family members who live far away for their work or education. Consequently, this type of modern communication will not only help people to connect to their loved ones, but also maintain close family relationships without geographical barriers.
In conclusion, although digital devices may contribute to the breakdown of family relationships, when family members use them moderately and properly, technology is actually a useful tool to develop family bonds. Therefore, I strongly believe that the advantages and disadvantages rely on how people use them rather than the fundamental consequences of technological devices.
