In today’s rapidly changing world, having a healthy lifestyle is necessary for each person. Some people argue that governments should tax unhealthy foods and drinks to improve public health, I partly agree with this view. In this essay, I will explain why.
On the one hand, taxing unhealthy foods and drinks can reduce the consumptions of products that contribute to serious diseases. For example, obesity, diabetes both of which can be caused by eating unhealthy foods. In addition, large-scale taxation of sugary drinks has been shown to reduce their consumptions and encourage food manufactures reduce the amount of sugar in their products. Therefore, this policy can influence both consumers and producers.
On the other hand, obesity is not caused caused solely by unhealthy foods and drinks. Advertising for cheap, unhealthy products and a lack of physical activities can cause this disease. Moreover, unhealthy food does not cause obesity immediatetly; the problems is occur when people consume such products excessively over the periods. Another concern is that food taxing may have significant effect on low-income people. If the prices of these unhealthy products increase, these consumers may meet greater financial pressure and could turn to cheaper, low-quality products instead.
In conclusion, taxing unhealthy foods and drinks can be an effective ways to reduce their consumptions. However, governments should carefully consider which products should be taxed rather than applying the policy to all unhealthy foods. Ultimately, taxation should be seen as one part of a broader solution that also includes public education, exercise and regulation of food advertising.
