Opponents of driverless cars have their own convincing grounds. To begin with, privacy concerns could arise along with the use of autonomous cars. To operate efficiently, these vehicles rely on extensive data collection including information about passengers’ movements and preferences. Therefore, with weak security, this could result in the potential of personal information leakage and misuse by corporations or hackers. Additionally, driverless cars could pose significant challenges to job markets. Due to wider adaptation of these vehicles, the demand for those working in transportation and related industries would be lessened, causing a rise in unemployment rate. As a result, this might increase government expenditure on welfare for these individuals, which would take up more resources to allocate to other aspects of the public.
However, I believe autonomous cars should be used widely. Firstly, these vehicles could offer more spare time for passengers. Granted, as these cars could drive autonomously without drivers’ attention, passengers could make use of the travel time to tackle tasks in hand or take a break. Consequently, this could make their road-going experience more tolerable and enjoyable, ensuring their overall well-being. Secondly, driverless cars might help improve traffic congestions. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, these cars can communicate and react with each other to maintain optimal speed and distance, thereby leading to shorter commuting time. Thanks to this, individuals could reduce their fuel consumption, benefiting both the environment and economy.
In conclusion, my opinion is that automatic vehicles are better to be used widely despite having some drawbacks.
