Some people argue that it would be better if there were wide usage of driverless cars. Personally, I strongly agree with this opinion because self-driving cars can reduce the number of car accidents, as they are more stable drivers than humans. In addition, the wide use of them is likely to decrease air pollution since the majority of driverless cars run on electricity.
Firstly, the spread of self-driving cars is advantageous, as they prevent an immense number of car accidents. The main reason for this is the stability of cars driven by computer systems, as they cannot feel emotions. This quality is crucial on the road, as according to statistics presented by the Times, the majority of car accidents occur due to the unstable emotional states of drivers, such as anger, stress, or fatigue. For example, a driver who is angry or upset might make impulsive decisions, like speeding or cutting off other cars, which significantly increases the risk of an accident. In contrast, self-driving cars operate based on algorithms and sensors that consistently follow traffic rules and respond to road conditions without emotional interference.
Secondly, the wide use of driverless cars positively impacts the environment, as it reduces air pollution. This can be explained by the fact that most self-driving cars are electric, as it is easier for makers to produce them in the electric setting, which is better compatible with self-driving systems. In fact, the electric fuel is most environmentally friendly, as it does not exhaust fumes that contaminate air. For example, research centers funded by Stanford University measuring air pollution in cities where petrol-running cars are restricted found that the level of CO2 in the air of these cities is twice lower than in others.
In conclusion, I believe that the proliferation of self-driving cars is beneficial because, being sustainable, they can reduce the number of car accidents, and the fact that most of them run on electricity can reduce air pollution.
