According to my opinion, learning english at school is often given priority over learning local languages. This can have negative impacts on local languages. It can also adversely effect the preservation of local languages. I don’t know about other countries but in India, English language is given more importance than local languages. According to me this is somewhere wrong to give more importance to foreign language as compared local languages. If local languages are used for writing and speaking, the upcoming generation will not be aware of the nation’s mother tongue languages.
There is nothing bad to learn English, the problem is that people are forgeting their home languages in order to learn some other foreign language. A person should should have knowledge about english, as English is widely spoken in the world and it is accepted as a medium of communication allover the world. In order to preserve local languages and to make new generations aware of the local languages, Government should steps regarding this. For eg- ministry of education should make local language of a particular state complusory in school curriculum. Like for Punjab punjabi language should be made compulsory to learn in schools.
These steps will help students to get knowledge of local language along with the knowledge of English. We have to ensure survival of local languages because these languages are related to our country’s culture. If we will not make efforts now then it that day is not too far when our regional language will become extinct.
In conclusion it can be said that people should learn English, learning English is not bad. We all should have knowledge of English. But for the sake of other foreign language which is not of home country forgeting local language is not a good thing. People should take care of their mother tongue language and should be taught to their children as well.
