Learning local languages is perceived by some people to be less important than learning English. In my opinion, everyone should learn English as it acquired a relevance worldwide. However, local languages should be protected and still taught in school as they are an essential part of the culture heritage of a nation.
First and foremost, learning English should be imperative for everyone as it is the most world’s spoken language, holding a relevance in all the part of the globe. Knowing English is essential to communicate with the majority of the individuals worlwide. In fact, for a non-english speaker is hard to have access to a vast work positions and to most universities in the world. In fact, not only British or American higher education institutions have the minumum English criteria, where each candidate must possess an official language certification, but even German, French and Italian universities want their students to speak English. Nevertheless, since English holds this importance, I believe that it should be taught throughout the education systems worlwide.
However, it is important to acknowledge that local languages are an essential part of the cultural heritage of a country, thus they must be protected through educational programs. Take, for example, sicilian dialect. Linguistics experts claim that this particular dialect is to consider as a language, from all the points of view. The survival of sicilian dialect would mean the survival of the history of the Sicilian culture, which can be done through the inclusion of the dialect in all schools curricula.
In conclusion, while I recognise the importance held by English as it is the most spoken language in the globe, teaching local language should not be neglected as they constitute an important aspect of the cultural heritages of a community, thus they must be taught in school.
