Today, many citizens are less interested in local galleries and attractions since their marketing fails, and if the government promoted museum attendance through public events, public participation would increase.
To begin with, these days fewer locals attend museums and historically significant places since these places have poor marketing. Mostly only those who are already interested in the local attractions know about activities occurring there, while citizens who see these places only as tourist attractions are not informed about their activities. The reason for this is because these landmarks are promoted through their social media pages or sites, which are not often visited by local people. As a result they are unaware that their local sights have more things to offer because the marketing is targeted for the potential audience such as tourists or people who are interested in them, while it fails to attract locals.
In order to address this issue and engage people in museums and historical sites, the government should host different events such as lectures or guided tours. If the local authorities arranged more interactive events like workshops during holidays or weekends, public interest would increase since more people would be free and they could visit these places with their family too. For example, recently Almaty Museum of Arts organized a guided tour for children during winter break and it attracted not only schoolers, but also their parents who visited the museum with them, and whole families were engaged in it. Besides, these social activities will lead locals to be more engaged in the events that these places are organizing.
In conclusion, while one of the reasons why people do not visit their local museums and landmarks is because their marketing is focused on tourists rather than on locals, it could be solved if the authorities arranged different types of events to gather interest.
