Education serves both individuals and the wider community, which has led to disagreement over which of these purposes should take priority. While educating people to make a meaningful contribution to society is undoubtedly important, I believe that greater emphasis should be placed on equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills required to pursue their own ambitions.
On the one hand, education can contribute substantially to national prosperity by producing a highly skilled workforce. Schools and universities equip individuals with specialised knowledge that enables them to enter professions in which their expertise can benefit society as a whole. A country with well-trained doctors, engineers and teachers, for instance, is better positioned to provide essential services, address shortages of skilled labour and maintain a productive economy. This can, in turn, stimulate economic activity and generate additional tax revenue, which governments can allocate to healthcare, infrastructure and other public services. Education therefore benefits not merely those who receive it, but also the communities in which their knowledge is applied.
On the other hand, education is equally valuable as a means of enabling individuals to realise their personal ambitions. People differ considerably in their interests and aspirations, and education can provide them with the practical knowledge and specialised skills required to pursue their desired career paths. An aspiring entrepreneur, for example, may acquire knowledge of financial management and resource allocation, allowing them to make informed decisions and avoid costly mistakes when establishing a business. This reduces the risk of failure and increases the likelihood of building a sustainable enterprise, thereby bringing the individual closer to financial independence and their long-term goals. In my view, this individual purpose deserves slightly greater priority, since people are generally more likely to apply their abilities effectively when their education is aligned with goals they have chosen for themselves.
In conclusion, education plays an integral role in society by developing skilled professionals and contributing to national prosperity. Nevertheless, I believe its primary focus should be on empowering individuals to pursue their own ambitions, as personal development can ultimately generate substantial benefits for society as well.
