People often said that museums and art galleries should not show the works of artists from other countries, and exclusively show the works of local artists. However, I think we should instead adjust the percentage and offer a more balanced catalogue, showing the works of the artists from other countries will offer extra insights.
While it is good to be proud of our local artists and wanting to give them special attention, I think there is a better solution. That is, instead of blocking other countries arts completely, we can adjust the percentage of them in the showings. For example, having the main attention dirrected for the local artists and showing few currated arts from other countries as extra. This curration process can also prevent arts that are not appropiate for the local community.
Secondly, limiting ourself with only the local artists’ arts will reduce our exposure to other countries cultures and ideas. This might result in the lack of reference and inspiration, compared to having exposed to many arts from all around the world. Having arts from other countries might also open opportunities for the local artist to show their works on the other countries’ museums, like an exchange of art showings, this will greatly boost the exposure of the local artists internationally.
To sum things up, giving extra attention to local artists is great, but we should also give opportunities for international artists by doing art exchanges, which can boost our local artists exposure. Fresh arts from other countries can also offer some fresh ideas and culture references, which can also boost the quality of the local artists.
