Global fashion trends have become a primary source for selecting clothing among people worldwide today. There are three major reasons for this reaction to trends.
Firstly, social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok are used by over a billion people. Most individuals encounter fashion through bloggers or models on these platforms, which influences them to adopt similar fashion trends. Secondly, top companies produce prestigious products, and they largely dictate fashion trends. This is because affluent or well-known individuals often purchase their fashion items, further driving the trends. Thirdly, tourism plays a significant role by facilitating the exchange of cultural attire and showcasing heritage. For instance, many tourists seek unique items or souvenirs for their families that they haven’t seen before. This practice tends to reinforce trends that originate from their travels upon their return to their home countries.
On the other hand, there are negative consequences to consider alongside the positive aspects. The overconsumption of clothing leads to excessive waste, which is detrimental to the environment. Many people dispose of clothes due to global trends, and this creates a habit of constantly changing wardrobes to keep up with trends. As a result, global fashion gains precedence over cultural attire. It raises concerns that cultural heritage may diminish and not be passed down to the next generation. Each nation has its own social behaviors shaped by its unique cultural identity.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that fashion trends should embrace and preserve both cultural and global clothing. A balanced approach that values both would maximize the benefits of fashion in our society.
