The discussion towards mandatory voting has divided throughfully people’s opinion. Some of them relying on both extremes of the discussion, where it’s argued that the ethic behind it can infringe individuality and uninformed choices, while others might think that mandatory elections can actively build a stronger democracy. In this essay, I will discuss both points of view and give my own opinion.
Many people may consider that obligatory elections can be ethically cuestionable, since it crosses a line on the individuality of the citizens, reducing the sense of freedom in their choices regarding emitting an important personal decision. Additionally, the need to make a decision in a certain period of time doesn’t not guarantee that the person made an informed decision, wether the cause could be not caring about builiding a personal politic statement or rushing into deciding without taking ito account all the aspects of the decision to make.
On the other hand, it’s discussed that legislating voting as mandatory can be a huge improvement for a better democratic society, because if every citizen votes, the election results would reflect the society feeling towards to an actual political context, potentially resulting into electing a politician that can meet the requirements of the society causing a benefit to it.
In my opinion, I don’t think that voting should be mandatory, since every individual has their own context that can affect emitting a vote. However, even if my statement is that it shouldn’t be mandatory, I believe that is highly important the government efforts on spreading clear information about the country and it’s managing, aiming to providing people information so they can build their own opinion about what the country needs and make an informed vote.
