The question of whether many companies should fund sports by promoting themselves is a topic of debate. Although some people argue that it provides benefits for sport, other believe that this is disadvantageous. Equally strong cases can be for both sides, but I agree the former for some reasons.
On the one hand, supporting sport in terms of finance can be seen a change for the worse. First of all, it can change the main focus of sport, reducing the spirit of sportsmanship. Too much focus on advertising may shift attention from the game itself to profit-making. For example, nowadays, most people go to the sports tournament to support their favourite teams or athletes, but they want to watch intriguing games from them. But they may not try to win, because they have already get money from advertisement. Consequently, some of fans may lose interest and don’t want to tournament again. Secondly, not all companies promote useful advertisement. It can be dangerous in terms of health. Today, some fast food companies also compensate for sports team to attract more people. Some people may be influenced by these companies. For example, the fans of PSG often are subject to smoke, because their teams support the cigarette companies.
On the other hand, I am of the view that backing the sport team or athlete can be seen in positive light. One of the main merits is financial growth for sports, especially lesser-known ones. Money came from advertisement can be spent on improving facilities or bringing new equipments for sport. For example, the company of Coca cola made known some clubs in Uzbekistan by advertising and promoting the logos of these teams. As a result, these teams became popular, playing not only for money, but also for their supporters. Besides, sponsoring the sport may lead to the job creation. For example, job of advertising sometimes requires more and more people to work in. And also, people, who are backing the sports, may organise some sports event. It may create some occupation, like security guard or ticket seller or food vendors. Consequently, more and more people may be provided with jobs to make a living.
In conclusion, although there some demerits of sponsoring the sport such as reducing spirit of sportsmanship and creating unhealthy conditions, I strongly believe that its merits are far more significant when it comes to financial support and creating extra job opportunities.
