Band 5+: Many criminals re-offended after they have been punished. Why do some people continue to commit crimes after they have been punished, and what measures can be taken to tackle this problem?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Recent years, the reasons behind the crime remain elusive, and there are a number of criminals who commit further crimes after completing their prison sentences. I believe that lack of rehabilitation programs are the main reason. There are some possible solutions like reentry services to solve those problems.

The main cause of recidivism is that in many prisons there may be limited access to rehabilitation and reintegration programs. These programs such as job and life skills training can help inmates to acquire necessary skills and reintegrate into society successfully. Without such programs individuals cannot address the underlying issues and cannot break the cycle of criminal behavior.

Additionally ex-prisoners perpetrate crimes due to the neighborhood factors characterized by poverty, crime, and lack of job opportunities. After they are released from prison, there might be some difficulties when finding employment because of their criminal records. So it increases the risk of recidivism.

In order to deal with these issues. Governments should pay more attention in reentry services and programs for inmates. Programs provide institutional programing and convicted criminals could be forced to work on community projects in order to ensure they avoid the negative effects of neighborhood factors. Such programs like anger management, educational opportunities, and, trauma support groups.

In conclusion, an increase in recidivism in part caused by issues related to rehabilitation programs. More programs for inmates is needed for reintroducing them to society have the life skills necessary to stay on the right path. Therefore, not only we need to rehabilitate criminals but we also need to overhaul our prison system
