Nowadays, it is increasingly common for families to send their elderly to nursing homes. While this development has some benefits, various drawbacks can also result.
On the one hand, nursing homes have become popular these days, and there are numerous merits to this phenomenon. Firstly, these places are fully equipped with modern and advanced machines and a suitable surrounding environment that helps old people in their daily lives. The best illustration of this is that having a flat ground with limited or no stairs assists the elderly in walking and moving around conveniently independently or with the aid of devices, which minimizes the risk of falling. Secondly, taking care of these old people is no longer a burden on his family, as nurses and doctors there have been professionally trained in the geriatric field in order to manage their needs. Families, therefore, ensure the safety of their old relatives without worrying about them.
On the other hand, major negative concerns significantly occur due to sending old people to eldercare facilities. To begin with, one of the most common challenges that the aged encounter is the lack of loved ones around. Although there are frequent visits from relatives and their families, they believed that they were abandoned. Another point to consider is that they might be exploited by some of the staff working there. This,as a result, leads to serious psychological health problems, such as depression, which might weaken their immune system. Furthermore, care home residents are often surrounded by death and illness. Such an atmosphere is likely to curtail happiness and trigger severe depression.
In conclusion, despite the arguably benefits of specially-trained staff and well-equipped facilities that nursing homes can provide for the elderly, the demerits of depression and loneliness should also be taken into consideration.
