In today’s trends, society believes that the emergence of nursing homes plays a vital role that contributes to the betterment of elderly people’s well being, as they are taken care of by professionals on a daily basis. However, others believe that aside from the benefits this facility brings, it also comes with several challenges, especially affecting the emotional connection with the core family. This essay will scrutinize both the pros and cons of this issue.
From the pro standpoint, the presence of nursing homes give young active workers peace of mind, knowing that their old-parents receive appropriate health treatments, well-balanced nutritious meals, and a supportive community with the same age group. These factors have significant impacts to improve their productivity and health condition. According to the World Health Organization Report in 2012, elderly people taking care in nursing centers were 70% less likely to experience old-aged diseases, such as dementia and diabetic type-2.
Despite the benefits the presence of care homes contribute, it also comes with several risk factors. One of the possibilities that might happen is the emotional detachment with the core family, given that the busy schedules often cause the children to visit their parents. Ironically, the memory loss among the old-parents can occur anytime due to the age-factor. This similar event was experienced by my mother in 2012, when she took a visit to my grandmother in a nursing home. Then one day she suddenly forgot my mom’s name because of acute dementia.
In conclusion, the existence of nursing facilities for senior people have enormous benefits for the improvement of their well-being, especially health-related needs that sometimes are time-consuming and require advanced knowledge from their children. Hence, this objective can only be successfully accomplished with endless moral and emotional support by the core family as well, to be fully present for their elderly parents over time.
