In recent years housing shortage became one of the most prominent problems in modern cities. More and more people suffer from it, while state officials’ solutions are seen as unproductive or insufficient. This resulted in occurring of many solutions to these problems, most of them coming from local activists, which in some cases have even been analyzed and implemented on the government level.
Firstly, in order to come to a solution, reasons for this problem should be found in the first place. It is quite hard to define whether housing problem is a problem that occurred on it’s own or rather a complex conclusion to a large amount of other problems that were present in recent years, but the public tends to believe that the most sufficient reason for housing shortage to occur was a vast growth of population in most of the underdeveloped countries, especially in metropolitan cities of those. And indeed, it’s noticeable that since the beginning of the 20th century rapid growth of population was present in most of the countries, however it were African and Southeast or East Asian countries in which this growth was the highest. This resulted in shortage of viable space, which not a lot of people had in poorer areas to begin with, but after the population boom it became even less accessible. Another cause for this problem is ecological factor that became on of the key reasons for most of the modern problems in the beginning of the 21st century. More and more areas become uninhabitable due to climate change, resulting in melting of ice caps and flooding of coastal areas, which served as on of the most popular areas for people to live in due to sociological and economical factors
Both of those reasons require different kinds of solutions however. For instance, if housing shortage is something that occurred due to the growth of the population, than, since it is impossible to stop this growth, measures such as massive construction works should be implemented in order to widen the cities or even construct other habitable areas, be that communes or other cities. This measure can be seen in Moscow and southwestern American cities for example, in which massive growth of the urbanized regions was noticeable since the 2010s. This measure, although quite expensive, would result in appearance of new habitable regions and areas, which would in term solve the housing shortage problem. However, if it is discovered that climate change is the most dominant reason for the housing shortage, then this will once again show that it is fight with climate change that should be of top priority to the public. This however does not necessarily mean that the solution stated above should be forgotten. In fact, it just shows that not only should growth of the cities be fulfilled, but also construction of other structures that would deal with the problems that occurred due to environmental factors.
In conclusion, it is worth noting that reasons for housing shortage, being one of the most dominant problems in modern world, are not yet fully known. More research should be done in order to find solutions to this problem, but what can be said already is that the solutions that were stated above in the text are the ones that should be taken into account when fighting long term results of housing shortage
