Parents assert that there is a growing concern about the promotion of hostility among their children through video games, TV shows, and other media. This problem stems from two factors. However, by employing effective solutions can prevent this from accuring.
The first cause derives from the lack of regulation and oversight on the contents of these programs. In other words, due to insufficient supervision and the ubiquity of violence-themed entertainment through the internet and social media, children easily access to aggressive contents without proper age restrictions and guidelines. Take PUBG for example; this game can be effortlessly downloaded and played by children under 10 years old. To counteract this problem, governmants should impose stricter guidelines on the promotion and availability of these programs. Indeed, they should limit children’s access to these kinds of video games and TV shows. For instance, age appropriate rating and penalties for non-compliance are useful restrictive guidelines.
The second reason of this problem is the normalization of violence in media. The frequent portrayal of brutality in various forms of media, such as video games, has led to desensitization and normalization of violence among children, leading children to percieve hostility as an acceptable means of conflict resolution or entertainment. To restrict this kinds of contents, producers should be encouraged to creat engaging non-violent programs, promoting positive values, such as cooperation and empathy. Indeed, incentivize or reward creators producing high-qulity games and shows can also encourage other creators to make more educational TV shows, such as Sesame Street, promoting ethical values among children.
As has been said, violence-themed programs can enhance brutality among children. The roots of this problem are lack of supervision on contents and normalization of violence. But at the same time, some measures, such as implementing stricter rules and incentive schemes, can be taken to combat this issue.
