One possible cause of this trend may be the increasing number of vehicles on the roads, resulting in traffic jams. Indeed, it takes a considerable amount of time to arrive to specific destination if there is a traffic congestion, which is popular in urban areas. In cities where traffic jams are common, such as Almaty and Shanghai, for instance, people whose school or work is not located within a walking distance usually come late; therefore, because of traffic congestion, people spend more and more time traveling, especially in urban areas.
Nevertheless, this developing challenge can be tackled with proper investments from governments. In fact, putting greater emphasis on public transit by making them more appealing and technologically advanced, the pressure on traffic can be reduced. For example, dedicating a sufficient amount of funds in better cooling or heating systems in bus or metros and enhancing their disigns, governments can encourage more individuals to choose mass transit over private car; consequently, decreasing the total number of vihicles on roads, resulting in fater travelling.
