Nowadays, with technological advances such as the invention of the Internet or computers and smartphones have enabled the development of various social media platforms like Tiktok, Instagram, or Facebook. However, some people have the idea that instead of improving the connection between humans globally, social media actually has more disadvantages than advantages. In this essay, I will give my explaination as to why I disagree with this opinion.
To begin with, social media keeps humans connected to each other. It allows people to interact with and share about their daily lives to others, serving as a way to make new friends. Facebook is a good example of this, as it is a popular platform specifically designed for interacting and meeting new people online. Often advertised as a way to keep friends and family connected, many have also found lifelong friends through Facebook. Personally, I have also met and talked to many people from all around the world on the platform, with many still being some of my closest online friends to this day. Furthermore, Facebook also utilizes this ability to introduce Facebook Marketplace, a place where potential business owners can begin advertising and selling their products, helping tremendously with the process of gaining popularity for the business.
In addition, with the rise in popularity of content creators, social media also doubles as entertainment, with platforms like Tiktok or Youtube responsible for most of the content uploaded to the internet today. Some may argue that online entertainment is not healthy as content on these platforms are hard to manage, as a result, harmful or explicit content may find its way to many people without being noticed. These concerns are true, however, the companies responsible are trying their best to fix these problems by introducing better moderation of content as well as a system for users to report content that they find offensive. Consequently, social media is getting safer and safer as time passes on, with informative and useful information such as cooking and tutorial channels, and even official news channels like the BBC from the UK has made its way onto social media in order to futher inform the public.
In conclusion, I wholeheartedly disagree with the opinion that social media is harmful. In contrast, it is one of the best methods today to deliver useful information like news or tutorials, serving as a way to keep people connected, as well as to make new friends from all around the world.
