We live in a fast-moving era, where everything comes in a package, most of which are non-reusable, inducing a throw-away mindset. The harmful part of this phenomenon is that a large number of packages are made from plastic, a non-biodegradable material that does not decompose, significantly contributing to pollution. I strongly believe that this has become a global issue that needs serious attention, and must be promptly resolved before it aggravate.
To begin with, the usage of plastic packaging has become inevitable in our modern word because of its convenience, and it costs lesser than its alternatives, such as paper, glass, and cloth. Moreover, plastic is easy to use, it can be used for anything either liquid or solid, and it can be molded and shaped in any desired form. For instance, using a plastic bottles for juice is much more convenient for transportation compared to glass bottles that might get broken before arriving to the final destination. Additionally, plastic bottles costs much less to manufacture and weight lighter than glass bottles. On the downside, most of plastic packages are single-used, hard to get rid of, and are non-biodegradable material. Which means, it remains in nature forever, and the upraise of plastic pollution is happening at a very rapid rate affecting the whole earth, including mankind, wildlife, and aquatic life.
Thus, to mitigate this problem alarmingly escalating, measures must be taking, and promptly. For instance, we can reduce plastic garbage by replacing plastic bags by cloth or paper bags. We can start use biodegradable materials, there are already scientific breakthroughs making natural-based degradable materials that could be used instead of plastic. We must adopt a waste sorting and recycling behavior. Moreover, we must clean our oceans from plastic litter, that is mistaken for food by marine animals, causing their death.
to sum up, the throw-away culture need to be fixed with holistic solutions, starting with ourselves, our community, and science. Otherwise, this will become a crucial problem to deal with.
