As students embark on their learning journey at university, they often struggle to study compared to learning at school. This essay will discuss the reasons behind this phenomenon and then offer some feasible solutions to tackle the situation.
To begin with, there are a number of factors responsible for the greater hardship students usually experience when pursuing their tertiary education, two of which are specialized knowledge and the lack of external support. Regarding the former, college students have to acquire plenty of knowledge related to their faculties which requires them to sharpen their logical and critical thinking skills to understand. This difficulty can hinder those who even had a good academic performance in their school years as subjects in science or social studies usually revolve around applying fixed formulas or memorizing facts, and therefore, do not demand these thinking skills. As for the lack of assistance from other people, university students when making their educational endeavors often move away from their hometown to a major city where their university is located. Without the appropriate supervision of their parents, which is often available when they studied at high school, they can easily fall prey to numerous temptations such as games or social gatherings, potentially making them waste time and harming their academic results.
Nevertheless, steps can be taken to solve these mentioned issues. First, universities can provide additional support for their students. Apart from lectures delivered on campus, additional online lecturing should also be offered so that students can study at their own pace at home to make sure that they have understood the lessons. Besides that, colleges should also organize numerous extracurricular activities related to study, which gives students a chance to benefit from these and prevents them from engaging in negative activities which could harm their learning. For example, university clubs can hold academic contests where students can team up with each other and compete. This will definitely motivate the participants to make an effort in their learning process.
In conclusion, the difficulty in knowledge acquisition and the lack of support are two main reasons explaining why students in higher education struggle more than they did in their school years. However, steps can be taken to alleviate the issue.
