In this day and age, many teenagers consider taking an additional year before jumping into their bachelor studies. However, it has been a tradition for years to start them after finishing school. Therefore, a rather interesting question arises as to why people do that and which is far better.
For centuries, people all over the globe had put a start on their higher institution degree persuasion right after high school. They thought that by doing that, they would not lose time as before our modern age a degree was necessary to have a job; therefore, many wished to get to work as soon as possible, as money was fundamental. Moreover, by not having a gap year, high school graduates didn’t have time to forget their freshly received knowledge. However, it might have some downsides, as not having time to think about your future career and starting to pursue it at such a young age may be fatal for the rest of your life.
On the other hand, we have the modern generation, who are actively thinking about having that one year off. This allows them to rest after a decade of studying, get energized and motivated for the future, and also consider thoroughly their future career. This, however, wasn’t entirely possible before, as the quality of life raises day by day; most of the youngsters all over the world are not as focused on working to survive for the reason that it isn’t as essential as in the older times. Still, by getting the year off, teenagers might forget some of the knowledge gained in school, which might make it harder for them to get into universities.
In conclusion, there are many upsides and downsides to getting a gap year in our modern society, such as deciding on the future job and understanding themselves better by starting their adulthood. However, it is not as clear as it might seem at first; thus it would be better for new adults to consider taking that action only after having a conversation with their parents, who would be able to support the child financially during the gap year.
